Wizz Air is a Budapest-based ultra low-cost airline that has grown significantly over the last decade. They operate from several UK airports and cover a wide range of European destinations, plus some routes into North Africa and the Middle East. If you’re looking for cheap flights for a city break or a longer trip, they’re worth checking.
Does Wizz Air offer an NHS discount?
No. Wizz Air does not offer a specific NHS or Blue Light Card discount on flights. As an ultra low-cost carrier their fares are already stripped back, and they don’t run loyalty or sector discount schemes in the same way some other airlines do. There are still ways to keep costs down though, which we’ve covered below.
Where does Wizz Air fly from in the UK?
Wizz Air operates from a number of UK airports. Their main UK bases are:
- London Luton — their largest UK operation with the most routes.
- London Gatwick — smaller but growing.
- London Stansted — book your parking early if you’re flying from here, prices go up fast.
- Glasgow Prestwick — the most convenient option for NHS staff in central Scotland.
- Doncaster Sheffield — good for South Yorkshire and the East Midlands.
- Cardiff — worth checking if you’re based in Wales.
- Bournemouth — serves the south coast.
How to keep costs down with Wizz Air
Wizz Air’s base fares can be very cheap, but the total price climbs quickly once you add extras. The main things to know:
- Cabin bag restrictions. Wizz Air’s free allowance is one of the most restrictive around. Only a small personal item (roughly 40x30x20cm) is included in the base fare. A standard carry-on costs extra. Check the current dimensions on their site before you pack, as these do change.
- Wizz Discount Club. A paid annual membership that reduces fares and bag fees. If you fly with them two or three times a year it will likely pay for itself.
- Book as early as you can. The cheapest fares go fast, especially on summer routes. Prices on the same flight can vary considerably depending on when you book.
- Check your dates. Mid-week flights are usually cheaper than weekend ones. If your shifts give you some flexibility on travel dates, it’s worth spending a few minutes comparing prices across different days.
- Watch the checkout carefully. Seat selection, priority boarding and insurance are pre-ticked on some booking flows. It’s easy to end up paying for things you didn’t want if you click through quickly.
Don’t forget airport parking
If you’re driving to the airport, NHS staff can get parking discounts at most of the airports Wizz Air uses. Pre-booking through Holiday Extras or APH is nearly always cheaper than turning up and paying on the day.
