Chester Zoo is one of the UK’s most visited zoos and is located on the outskirts of Chester in Cheshire. It is operated as a charity and is one of the largest zoos in the UK by land area, covering over 125 acres. The zoo houses more than 35,000 animals across hundreds of species and is particularly well known for its conservation work and endangered species breeding programmes.
What to see at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo features a wide range of animal habitats across themed zones. Key areas include Islands, a tropical habitat covering species from Southeast Asia including Sumatran orangutans and sun bears; the Realm of the Red Ape, covering orangutan species; and extensive big cat, elephant, giraffe and rhino areas. The zoo also operates a monorail and a narrow-gauge railway for getting around. Indoor and covered habitats are available, which makes the zoo a viable visit in colder weather.

Getting to Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo is located off the A41 north of Chester city centre. There is a large on-site car park with a parking charge. Chester railway station is the nearest mainline station, with bus services running to the zoo from the city centre. NHS staff planning a family day out in the northwest can also look at Legoland Discovery Centre Manchester and Alton Towers for nearby options.
