What is Income Protection Plus
Income Protection Plus is a long-term income protection product designed for NHS staff and other healthcare professionals. It provides a monthly income if illness or injury prevents a return to work, continuing beyond the point at which NHS sick pay ends. Cover can run until age 65 or until the policyholder returns to work, depending on the plan chosen.

NHS sick pay and what happens after
NHS Agenda for Change contracts include statutory sick pay provisions, but these are time-limited. Full pay applies for the first period of absence, followed by half pay, after which sick pay ends entirely. For staff facing long-term illness or injury, this creates a gap between the end of NHS sick pay and any return to work. Income protection is designed to fill that gap. The exact sick pay entitlement depends on length of NHS service.
Income Protection Plus key features
The policy covers a range of illnesses and injuries that prevent work. Cover can be set to begin from day one of absence, or from a chosen deferred period of 7, 14 days or 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, depending on when NHS sick pay ends for the individual. Up to 70% of pre-tax income can be covered. The plan includes access to a 24/7 virtual GP and confidential counselling through the Health Hero app. A profit share feature also aims to pay a cash lump sum at the end of the policy whether or not a claim has been made.
